DESCRIPTION: Ellipsoid to ovoid structures with or without envelop of thin clay-rich zone; outer surface often well-defined and smooth, long axis of structure often subparallel to bedding. With or without an opening terminally or subterminally; in some cases, an opening occurs medially on the upper surface of the structure.

BEHAVIOR(S): Calichnia, reproduction

ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS: Various continental environments with pedogenic modification. Indicate a well-drained vadose (unsaturated) zone in soil.

POSSIBLE TRACEMAKERS: Pupation chamber of beetle larva (Coleoptera) and wasp larvae (Hymenoptera)

GEOLOGIC RANGE: Triassic to recent
