Stelloglyphus Vyalov, 1964


DESCRIPTION: Relatively large rosette-like trace consisting of about 25 very closely spaced radiating ribs or flattened ridges without a well-defined central area. Specimen shown occurs in a concretion with the upperpart exhibiting a well-defined central area containing a less well-defined central tube.

BEHAVIOR(S): Deposit feeding (fodinichnia), resting trace (cubichnia), or dwelling (domichnia).

ENVIRONMENTAL SETTINGS: Marine environments

POSSIBLE TRACEMAKERS: Deposit-feeding worm or resting trace of an upside-down jellyfish.

GEOLOGIC RANGE: Pennsylvanian-recent?

REMARKS: Similar in morphology to the problematic trace fossil Rotamedusa, which has centrally radiating ridges or ribs, up to 24 in number, that terminate abruptly at the margins (Häntzschel, 1975). Description originally by Simpson (1969).
